UpEnergy Achieves Historic SD VISta VERRA Certification for Tanzania Fuel-Efficient Cookstove Project, Setting a New Standard in East Africa

We are proud to announce the first SD VISta VERRA certification for our Tanzania Fuel-Efficient Cookstove Project! This milestone follows our recent announcement of Tanzania’s first Article 6 authorization and makes us the first in East Africa and the second cookstove project developer globally to achieve SD VISta certification.

In the absence of affordable or accessible alternatives, families often rely on biomass based cooking fuels like charcoal, which are costly and time-consuming. Our fuel-efficient cookstove project not only contributes to decarbonization by reducing charcoal needs within households but also brings multiple co-benefits, including financial savings and freeing up cooking time for more productive use. Through the rigorous SD VISta certification process, we have successfully demonstrated and labeled these significant impacts continuing our fight against energy poverty and climate change with projects and technology that benefit those most vulnerable to climate risks.

What is SD VISta? The Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) by VERRA is the leading standard for certifying the real-world benefits of social and environmental projects. It covers a broad spectrum of benefits from gender equity and economic development to affordable clean energy and wildlife restoration

Why is this important? SD VISta facilitates large-scale investment in sustainable development by providing reliable, independently verified data on the social and environmental benefits of projects. This ensures full credibility and value for all stakeholders involved.

With this certification, our project’s benefits are not just recorded but verified by expert, third-party auditors, reinforcing our commitment to advancing the global Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations.

We make this happen with support from partners who believe in a just energy transition in which low-income people are prioritized by climate finance.
